Why You Should Use Two-Factor Authentication When Using Your Club Or Association’s Website
As I’m going about my normal work each day, I will occasionally have a random thought, like, what would it look like if a banana ate another banana or if a uramaki roll was a murderer? So I quickly jump onto JungleVision AI, Member Jungle’s in-house AI image generator to find out.
I enter my username and password, and then, BLAM, I get hit with “A six-digit single-use code has been sent to your email. Please enter it to continue,” and I roll my eyes so hard they nearly dislocate.
Despite how annoying I find this minor inconvenience, it is well worth it at the end of the day. It ensures that the website stays secure and protected, so I am always able to find out what the random thought I’ve just had would look like, speaking of which.
My point is this process, which is called two-factor authentication, can be a little annoying. No one wants to have any delays when they are just trying to log in to something and do something important (like make a terrifying banana cannibal), but it is absolutely a necessary inconvenience.
So, let’s cover what two-factor authentication is and why you should be using it when logging in to your club’s website.
What Is Two-Factor Authentication?
Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a way to enhance the security of your online accounts. It does this by requiring two kinds of evidence (or factors) to verify your identity before granting access to an account.
Usually, when you log in to a website or account, you enter your username and password. This password is one factor of authentication. A second factor can be added to your login process for increased security. This means that if someone has your password, they cannot log in without the second factor.
Think of it as having a normal lock on your door and a deadbolt for added security. Yeah, it might be a bit more effort to have to get out a second key and undo the deadbolt every time you come home, but it's much better than coming home to find this little freak has broken into your home.
Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security to your account by requiring a second piece of information, along with your password, to log in. This helps protect both your account and your entire club or association's website from unauthorised access.
What Are Examples Of Factors Of Authentication?
Factors of authentication are what you need to log in to a site or use a service.
These factors fall into three categories:
Something You Know
- Passwords
- Personal identification numbers (PINs)
- Secret questions and answers
Something You Have
- Smartphones
- Hardware tokens
- Smart cards
Biometric Data
- Fingerprints
- Facial recognition
- Voice recognition
Usually, 2FA combines the first two categories: something you know and something you have. For example, you may enter your password and then be told to enter the PIN number sent to your phone or email. With the Member Jungle system, this is exactly how two-factor authentication works, you log in with your username and password, and then a one-time passcode will be sent to you via email or SMS.
Why You Should Use Two-Factor Authentication
Now that your club or association has signed up to Member Jungle, your admins can choose to make two-factor authentication optional or mandatory for you as a member. If they make it mandatory, then we are all good here; they are taking your and their data security very seriously. If it's optional, we strongly recommend that you choose to use it.
Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your account, making it much harder for unauthorised access. Think about it: your account likely contains personal information like your email, phone number, home address, and much more. Two-factor authentication helps protect this sensitive data from falling into the wrong hands.
Yes, it can be a little bit of an eye-rolling hassle, but for the security and peace of mind it brings, it is well worth doing.
