The recent changes to NSW legislation means that all firearm owners who don’t hold Primary Producer status must now join a club and log participation activities to maintain their firearms licences. This means that a whole bunch more firearm owners who have never needed to join a club before will now be required to.

  • Target and sports shooters must complete four participation activities; however, Category H pistol licence holders must participate in at least six competitive matches.
  • Hunting licence holders who do not have permission to shoot on rural properties require two participation activities.
  • Hunting licence holders who do have permission to shoot on rural properties must be members of a club; however, they are exempt from a minimum participation requirement.
  • Firearm collectors require one participation activity at an appropriate club meeting or event.

All this means, as I’m sure you’re rapidly finding out, that shooting and hunting clubs across the state are seeing large growth in new applications and membership renewals. While an increase in member numbers is definitely a good thing, it does come with a host of new challenges. The vast majority of hunting and shooting club committee members are unpaid volunteers who are suddenly facing a lot more admin work and helping lots of new members, some of whom have never been part of a club before, come to grips with how it all works.
