Here's a fun fact, which many of you may already know: Netball started life as a misinterpretation of basketball. Sports teacher Clara Baer had asked fellow teacher and basketball inventor James Naismith for a copy of his rules. Baer misunderstood this recommendation as the areas where players were not permitted to leave, and netball zones were created.

Most of the other differences between netball and basketball are because Baer and others removed the parts of basketball that they thought were “unlady like” in their new women's sport, like running, bouncing the ball or defending too close.

Aussie Rules Football has a less clear starting point, as it just seemed to slowly evolve in the colonies before being solidified in the mid-1800s. Some people claim it is a version of Gaelic football, but there is no evidence of this. Besides, if you were going to steal a sport from the Irish, it would be Hurling.
