What Are The 5 Best Membership Renewal Options?

Date:

Optimising membership renewal strategies is crucial for clubs and associations seeking to enhance long-term retention and stabilise revenue. Offering flexible payment options, such as automated credit card payments and multi-year memberships, can reduce checkout friction. Early-bird deals and extended automated grace periods help accommodate diverse financial situations and counter procrastination. By using a centralised platform like Member Jungle, organisations can improve membership retention year after year without increasing administrative burdens.

As the old adage goes, you need to make it as easy as possible for people to give you their money. Any undue friction can cause people, ever the capricious creatures, to change their minds at the last possible moment.

When it comes to your renewal process, this is even more important because you are likely asking your members for money and a substantial commitment. Any friction in this process can really affect how many members sign up for another year. So, with that in mind, let's look at some of the most effective renewal options people offer to see how you can improve your renewal process.

Also, we won’t be talking about the basics here; I’ll assume you’re already using things like automated reminder emails and allowing members to renew online. Instead, we’ll focus on what you can add to your renewal process to improve renewal rates. If you want to go over the basics, check out 3 Things You Can Do To Improve Your Membership Renewal Rates.

The 5 Best Renewal Options: Overview

Here is a quick look at the most effective strategies to remove friction from your payment process and maximise your membership retention.

  • Automated Credit Card Payments: Subscription-style billing allows members to set and forget their dues; this completely eliminates the friction of manual renewals and ensures payments happen effortlessly in the background.
  • Multi-Year & Lifetime Commitments: Rewarding upfront payments with slight discounts secures long-term loyalty; offering these options provides an immediate cash injection and guarantees retention for years at a time.
  • Early Bird Incentives: Time-limited discounts combat natural human procrastination; gamifying the process with small rewards encourages proactive renewals and saves your committee hours of administrative chasing.
  • Generous Grace Periods: Automating a one-to-three month buffer catches accidental churners who simply forgot to pay; this forgiving approach keeps busy members in your ecosystem without forcing them to start a brand new application.
  • Cheaper Supporter Tiers: Offering a low-cost, low-commitment tier retains members facing financial or time constraints; providing a dignified alternative to leaving keeps the door open for future full-price upgrades when their circumstances improve.

1. Automated Credit Card Payments For Membership Renewals

I’m going to generalise here, but chances are, if you're already using Member Jungle, your membership renewal system is pretty slick. Your system automatically detects when your members are coming up for renewal. The system then automatically sends them an email prompting them to renew. From your perspective, this is all automated and super simple.

However, think about it from your members’ perspective.

They get that email, then they have to make sure they have enough money in their account, jump onto the website or the app and click about three buttons. It’s undeniably a very easy process; it’s a far cry from our ancestors having to hunt or starve, but in today’s modern world of limitless convenience, it is friction.

Netflix doesn’t make you go to their website to manually pay them every month. You don't need to log into the Telstra or Optus app just to pay your standard phone bill. Why shouldn't your organisation offer that same level of effortless convenience?

By giving people the option to sign up for automatic credit card debits, you allow them to "set and forget" their membership. While I recommend against forcing people into automatic payments, giving them the choice is highly effective. In fact, according to the 2026 Membership Marketing Benchmarking Report, 44% of surveyed membership organisations already offer automatic renewal payments. They also found that 26% of organisations offer members the ability to pay for their memberships monthly or quarterly.

If you are already a Member Jungle customer, you already have this capability. The system allows you to combine these two concepts by setting up your membership products as monthly, quarterly, or annual automated subscription payments. Members can simply sign up, save their payment details securely, and let the system do the rest.

By adding the option for auto-renewing payments, you allow your members to pay their subscriptions in an effortless, frictionless way. It transforms renewals from a chore a member might forget to do, into a seamless background process.

2. Multi-Year Memberships

Offering multi-year memberships is a fantastic way to secure long-term commitment from your members. The concept is simple: you add a few membership tiers that reward upfront commitment with a slight discount. For example:

  • $100 for one year
  • $180 for two years
  • $400 for five years

By offering extra years at a reduced rate, you get a solid injection of upfront cash flow and lock in members for an extended period. A member who has already paid for three years is significantly less likely to drift away or stop actively participating in your organisation. So they are going to continue to come to events, buy tickets and merchandise, and spend money within your organisation for longer.

Sure, on paper, you might make slightly less per member than if they renewed at full price every single year. However, if your renewal rates are currently lower than you'd like, sacrificing a small percentage of potential future revenue to guarantee retention and secure upfront funds today is a trade-off well worth making.

Lifetime Memberships

Lifetime memberships are subtly but importantly different from standard multi-year deals. They aren’t so much about locking members in for several years as they are about rewarding long service and loyalty.

Usually, this isn't an option that the average member can just select from your public website. Instead, it is offered selectively. The idea is that if someone has already been an active, dedicated member for a decade, you invite them to upgrade to a lifetime membership. They pay a one-off premium fee, say, $1,000, or whatever makes sense for your club, and they are officially a member for the rest of their life.

Lifetime memberships are incredibly appealing to highly engaged, deeply loyal members who consider your club a core part of their lifestyle. For your organisation, this means a massive, immediate financial boost. Usually, you’d want to set up lifetime members as their own membership level with custom membership cards and a few bells and whistles to help them feel like VIPs. Again, by not making this a public option, but something only your team can offer, you make being offered a lifetime membership part of the honour.

3. Offer Early Bird Deals To Get More Renewals

As humans, we are procrastinators; I cannot tell you how many school assignments I did the night before they were due in a fugue state of anxiety and caffeine. If a membership doesn't officially expire until the 30th of the month, the vast majority of us will wait until 11:58 pm to renew it. Or, quite possibly, wait until we get the notice that our membership expired a week ago to actually go do it.

To combat this, you need to give your members a compelling reason to reach for their wallets before their membership runs out. And the thing that most regularly gets people to take action is a time-limited discount.

Offering a discount to members who renew their membership before it is due is a great way to get more members across the line, reduce late renewals, and increase overall retention.

It doesn’t even need to be a big discount. Our little lizard brains will be effectively triggered by the scarcity of a limited-time 5% discount, or a free club cap for anyone who renews two weeks before their expiry date.

The benefit to your organisation is immense. Offering a reward for early action drastically reduces the number of expired members you have to eventually chase down. Instead of stressing over plunging numbers at renewal time, your committee can sit back and watch the renewals roll in early, saving everyone hours of administrative work and providing a much clearer picture of your retention rate ahead of time.

4. Offering A Three-Month Grace Period

As we recently looked at in 4 Key Lessons from the 2026 Membership Marketing Benchmarking Report, figuring out exactly how long to wait before cutting off a non-renewing member is incredibly important. According to that report, more than half of all membership organisations offer a grace period of one to three months for lapsed members. According to that report, “Associations with renewal rates of 80% or higher are significantly more likely to offer a two-to-three month grace period than those with lower renewal rates.”

Now, by “grace period”, we mean the period of time after a member expires that they can renew their membership without having to start a new membership. During this period of time, they can still log in to your website and renew, but will lose access to all membership perks.

Throughout this grace period, your committee should continue to follow up with expired members via email, automated system reminders, and phone calls.

The Member Jungle platform allows you to fully automate these grace periods. Administrators can set specific auto-removal days, creating a 30, 60, or 90-day window where the lapsed member remains in the system before being officially removed. During this interim period, their information is neither deleted nor archived; the system simply continues to send them automated reminder emails. They can easily log in to pay their dues, completely avoiding the administrative friction of starting a brand new application from scratch.

5. Offer Cheaper Options For Those In Tough Times

Sometimes, when a member decides not to renew, it has absolutely nothing to do with how much they love your organisation. Money is just tight, and in today's economic climate, cutting back on hobbies is incredibly common.

If a member is dealing with unexpected bills or simply tightening their budget to cope with the cost of living, paying a $150 annual fee for a club can suddenly feel like an impossible luxury. Often, these people don't actually want to leave your community; they just can't justify the full cost right now.

Let Members Pay With Afterpay

Offering a "Buy Now, Pay Later" option, like Afterpay, provides a great way for members to afford their membership. It allows your members to split their membership fees, event tickets, and merchandise purchases into four manageable, interest-free instalments. By breaking down a daunting annual fee into smaller, predictable payments, you drastically reduce the friction associated with the checkout process.

Crucially, this doesn’t negatively impact your organisation's cash flow. Your committee receives the full transaction amount upfront from the provider, while Afterpay assumes the entirety of the risk for collecting the subsequent instalments.

Cheaper Membership Levels

This is where having a cheaper, low-commitment "Supporter" option comes in clutch. Instead of letting them walk out the door completely, you offer them a scaled-down alternative, like a $20-a-year tier. It provides a dignified way for them to step back without severing ties.

This gives them just enough access to stay connected to the community they care about. They still receive the monthly newsletter and get their invite to the annual Christmas party. Plus, if their financial situation improves later in the year, they can easily upgrade back to a full membership at a reduced price.

All of this can be made easy with a system like Member Jungle, which lets you create unique membership products and choose who can see and purchase them.
